When’s the right time to start discussing safety with your kids? The sooner the better!
Talking to your children about important topics can be challenging. Whether its bullying, money, or the birds and the bees, it’s hard to find the right time to bring things up. Discussing safety may be a delicate subject for some families, but it is absolutely necessary! The first step is talking about it; the next step is engaging your child in activities that promote awareness of their surroundings and body.
Keeping your children safe in today’s reality must start with implementing the knowledge of how they can avoid dangerous situations and protect themselves, if needed. IKM Krav Maga New York offers a comprehensive youth program and is the lead school for Krav Maga world wide. Krav Maga is the best self defense for your child by shaping their confidence and integrity while learning valuable techniques that will last into adulthood.
At IKM New York, we take pride in giving children the tools necessary to keep them safe and able to defend themselves, should they need to. Safety is always practiced before violence is used! Our classes use targeted age specific techniques while improving body awareness, coordination, posture, strength and overall physical fitness.
90% of children aged 9-13 have reported being victims of bullying. Parents will not always be there to advocate for their child, but parents can encourage their children to be confident and pull from their skills learned in class. These skills and tool set become more and more valuable as children get older, gain more independence and spend more time out of parents’ sight.
* Studies show that Martial Arts, among them Krav Maga classes raise self esteem and gives children both mental and physical tools to use at their disposal. This allows them to not feel like a victim, but rather empowered.

When starting up a new hobby, program, or activity, there are always an abundance of questions. When it comes to NYC Krav Maga, this is absolutely the case. We get questions ranging from diet to class lengths. Today, we tackle one of the most frequently asked questions: What do I wear to a Krav Maga class? Well, let’s start off easy and discuss a few items that you should absolutely not wear or bring to a Krav Maga class.
Don’t Bring: Jewelry is one of the main categories to avoid almost entirely—rings are bad for the punching bag and earrings can get caught up during training. In addition, avoid wearing your glasses. If contacts aren’t an option, try a pair of sports glasses. As for clothing itself, avoid wearing clothes that you care about—self defense courses require almost constant contact that can stretch and tear clothes over time.
Do Bring: Remember, Krav Maga is as much a workout routine as a self-defense program: you will be sweating. Wear lightweight workout clothes that dry quickly, and stick with shorts so your movements aren’t restricted. As for footwear, comfortable running shoes work the best; they allow for good traction and movement without weighing you down.
Once you begin training, whether it’s a general self defense course or Krav Maga NYC specifically, you’ll notice a change in your body’s overall need for resources, such as different caloric and hydration needs. When it comes to fitness, changing your diet to suit your new energy output is crucial, and without the proper modifications, you’ll find that your exercise regiment isn’t producing the results you may want. Here are a few tips on snacking and eating to boost your overall energy level:
Nuts: Nuts such as cashews, almonds, and hazelnuts are full of magnesium and protein to help convert sugars into healthy energy. Selenium, a natural mood and energy booster, is found in Brazil nuts and can also be mixed in for an energy boosting snack.
Lean Meats: This is likely the most obvious of choices, but crucial nonetheless. Turkey, lean pork, and chicken are high in protein and vitamin B-12, both a necessity for high-energy workouts.
Salmon: Salmon has been gaining popularity recently as a healthy alternative to red meats and other fatty proteins. Along with heart boosting minerals, omega-3 fatty acids help fight depression and boost energy.
Sticking to a few of these tips and experimenting with different diets while beginning training will ensure a safe, effective, and fun workout plan.
Krav Maga in NYC, and in other areas of the United States, isn’t a totally new concept, but over the last couple decades there has been a huge growth of popularity. A major aspect of this growth comes from Krav Maga’s new applications, like fitness classes in NYC, but the majority seems to come from a new wave of individuals interested in self-defense in general. A large segment of this population is increasingly female. However, more and more military and police professionals are interested in learning Krav Maga to help enhance their previous training and learn new techniques for the fight against crime. Take a look at this recent clip from The Discovery Channel that briefly looks into Krav Maga. Then stop by our website anytime to learn more!
We’ve previously featured information about our kid’s summer self-defense course, which is currently a very popular program. We also will tailor an individual lesson that goes at your own personal speed and at convenient times for you.
Here at IKM, we care about the well-being of every New Yorker and know that, in conjunction with our expert instructors, we can find a program that works perfectly for you—no matter your previous experience level. It’s widely believed that the effectiveness of your punch is simply a combination of speed, muscle, and technique. Of course, these each play a part in the training towards an effective and powerful punch; however, a recent study carried out by the Imperial College London and University College London (published in this online article in the UK’s Telegraph) argues that brain structure has a bigger influence than previously thought. This new research could reshape how self defense courses and martial arts training are completed.
In essence, the study found that the brain’s white matter, which has a direct effect on connections between brain regions, is directly related with punching ability. The researchers found that timing between the synchronized movement of the wrist and the shoulder areas is the tell-tale sign of a great punch. This data, however, is all still preliminary–stay tuned to learn more about how this affects Krav Maga NYC.
Krav Maga, and martial arts in general, has always been a huge part of the film industry–mostly because it’s entertaining and engaging to watch. In addition to the entertainment aspect, many actors and actresses have realized how much they enjoy Krav Maga and have even left their previous self defense courses to opt for a Krav-Maga-oriented program. Of course, we have yet to see many major films defined by Krav Maga such as some of the earlier Kung Fu movies, but we have seen an increase in Krav Maga knowledge over the years.
Take a look at this recent example of Liam Neeson defending himself while searching for his kidnapped daughter in the film Taken. These moves were clearly derived from Krav Maga.
Additionally, many roles require actors and actresses to be in top physical condition. Even if the character doesn’t have a direct connection to Krav Maga, fitness classes based on Krav Maga principles help to work out the whole body and each muscle group. Hilary Swank, for example, used Krav Maga training to get in shape for Karate Kid, then utilized similar training for Million Dollar Baby. Tyler Perry also used Krav Maga training to fit a role more accurately and eventually dropping over 30 pounds.
The culmination of historic events that led to the creation of NYC Krav Maga can be pinpointed to the birth and life of Imi Lichtenfeld. Born in Budapest in 1910, Imi was raised in a quite eclectic atmosphere. During the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, there was much clout for the well educated, but also individuals who were in great shape. His father was a huge influence on the development of his skill sets of which eventually led to the inception of Krav Maga. Samuel, Imi’s father, worked at a traveling circus where he met people who worked in trapeze and martial arts and loved to teach young Imi everything they could. By the 1940s, Imi was working directly with the State of Israel making plans for fighting tactics that eventually led to the creation of Krav Maga.
Krav Maga, as a martial art, can be seen as having a dual purpose: self defense courses, naturally, being the initial reason but, recently, the fitness application has taken hold. However, the focus should still be on a defensive course of action against aggressors. Luckily, many individuals with focused backgrounds have recently brought the popularity of Krav Maga to NYC. Last week we discussed self defense for kids–specifically the Krav Maga NYC Summer Camp. Bullying is an ever-growing issue for youths in American and around the world. We take it a step further by offering a Summer Camp program; learn more by watching the video below!
